Installing tile is not as difficult as it seems, especially if you follow these simple tips. But before we get started, make sure to take inventory of your home or business and determine which tile will look great on your floor or wall. Adding your favourite tiles to your shopping cart and then downloading your shopping list is the best approach to guide your conversation with a sales rep when you come in-store to purchase.

Whether you’ve just begun to lay tile or you’re a professional, there are always tips to make the process go easier, faster, and smoother. These tips can make the difference between an enjoyable project and one that’s frustrating to complete.
1. Plan your layout before you begin.
Decide where the tiles will go and how they’ll be arranged. Make sure there is enough space between tiles so they don’t overlap each other when they’re installed.
2. Combine the thin-set or grout, then let it stand for about 10 minutes
That allows dry chunks time to absorb water before you do the final mixing.
3. Never mix thin-set with sand or cement.
It’s tempting because sand and cement are cheaper than thin-set — but sand will create voids in your tile installation and cement can cause grout to crack over time.
4. Check the level before you start tiling.
Make sure your subfloor is level and flat before you start tiling. Even a small hump or dip in the floor can make it difficult to keep the tiles aligned. Measure from corner to corner with a tape measurer (see photo).
5. Use Spacers.
Spacers keep the spaces between tiles even, so that when they are set there will be no visible seams. (see photo).
